2008 British Open Shogi Championships

The 2008 British Open Shogi Championships will take place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May 2008. The championships will be hosted by Trinity College as part of the 2008 Cambridge Mind Sports Olympiad.

There will be trophies for the Open Champion, for the British Champion and for the best performance by a player who is not dan-rated. An entry fee of £10 (or 12 euros) will be collected on the day, and all entry fees will be returned as prizes. The Championships will also be used to select the British team for the 4th International Shogi Festival in Tendo, Japan, in November 2008. One dan player and one non-dan player will qualify for free air travel to Japan and free hotel accommodation.

In order to allow the tournament format and the team selection method to be set in advance, no entries will be accepted after Friday 25th April. There is also a ceiling on the total number of entries at 30.

More details are at www.msocambridge.org.uk, or contact David Faldon by email

Links to other shogi resources

The Shogi London pages may link more widely in future, but useful non-UK shogi resources include

Shogi.Net
(Pieter Stouten's comprehensive site also linking to the Shogi-L list)
Takodori's Entrance to Shogi World (Particularly good for teaching resources in English)
Shogi Prospect (Russian/English site and forum)

These are all good, but most importantly they link to other useful and interesting webpages. Shogi.Net is the most well established, but isn't updated that frequently. Shogi Prospect is looking to develop as an international forum

Other UK shogi links (1)

There aren't that many UK shogi pages at the moment. The current crop include

Phil Holland's shogi pages (club links and events, British Shogi Federation)
Tony Hosking's Shogi Foundation (mainly books)
Lucky Dog's Games (background to shogi, links to larger shogi variants)

Playing shogi in and around London

Shogi London provides information on the London Shogi Club, shogi events in or near London, and occasional other stuff.

The London Shogi Club normally meets on the last Saturday of the month, at Caffe Nero, 10 Bedford Street, London WC2E 7HE. [map]

Everyone is very welcome, regardless of strength or experience.

It is a good idea to check by email if travelling a long way as changes to the meeting date have been made in the past to accommodate a visiting Japanese Shogi Professional. Sometimes there are extra meetings.

The nearest rail station is Charing Cross. Embankment, Covent Garden and Leicester Square underground stations are close, but it's best to check which lines are running with Transport for London
